12 speaking prompts for cafe conversation classes

 1. You're at the bakery. You need a birthday cake for your kid with your favourite cartoon character. The baker has never seen or heard of this character. Describe the character as well as you can so the baker can create your cake.

2. You are in the police station. You saw someone committing a terrible crime. The police officer wants you to describe the criminal. Describe one of your classmates, but be careful not to look at them for too long or they will know it was you who gave them away to the cops.

3. In pairs see how many of the shops we passed to get to the cafe you can recall.

4. Judgy people-watching. Carefully look at the other people in the cafe. Can you guess what their jobs are? Do you think they have kids? What do you think they study/ied? Do you think they are from Auckland? Do you think they like parties? Do you think they are religious? Do you think they are left or right in their politics?

5. Three-word sentences. Have a dialogue with each other, but you are only allowed three words at a time.

6. 20 Y/N questions. Think of a job. You partner has to guess the job in 20 questions. You can only say "yes" or "no". Think of a wild animal, etc

7. You are yourself aged 7. You partner has to ask you five questions to find out what you're like. E.g. Where do you like to go? Who's you're best friend? What's your favourite food? etc...

8. Do you have any party tricks? Show your partners and teach them your trick.

9. 2 truths and a lie. Tell your partner two true things and one lie about you on these topics:

animals

clothes

school

food

You partner has to guess which is the lie.

10. Interruption - what, when, who, why, where, how, which? In this game you must try to ask your partner as many questions as possible. But you must always ask a new question before they have completely finished telling you the answer.

Start with this question:  What's a good memory for you?

11. Exactly ten words. Tell you partner about each of these things in exactly 10 words:

Your hopes and dreams

Something that makes you angry

Something you'll never forget

Something you can't do very well

Something you miss

Your favourite item of clothing

Your worst fear

What you want to do do tonight

How you have changed in the last year

12. You have $100 for each of the students at the cafe. Decide what gift you'll buy each person. Why?
